The 2006 Grands-Echezeaux is another firm, unyielding wine. Today it comes across as quite inward, yet there is plenty of fruit lying behind a wall of tannin. All this needs is time. It is a hugely promising bottle. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2031. Importer: Atherton Imports, Menlo Park, CA; tel. (650) 328-6639

Good full red-ruby. Black fruits and violet on the nose; the purest to this point of these 2006s. Juicy, precise and suave, with good clarity and lift to the black fruit flavors. (For his part, Gros finds this more agreeable but a bit sluttish; I find it fresh.) The tannins are nicely buffered by fruit on the long finish.

Good medium red. Very ripe but tight nose hints at raspberry liqueur and maraschino cherry. Firmly built and quite primary, with lively flavors of black raspberry, blackberry and crushed black pepper. Finishes with solid but ripe tannins and noteworthy minerality.
