Suffering from reduction and in need of the oxygen it will receive in its pre-bottling racking, the 2003 Nuits-St.-Georges Vaucrains (red) displays a leather-dominated nose and a tight (due to reduction) character packed with fresh blackberries and black cherries. This wine’s power, concentration, and depth are immensely impressive, as is its intense, fruit-packed finish. Projected maturity: 2007-2015. Importer: Robert Kacher Selections, Washington, DC; tel. Medium ruby. Wild crushed blackberry, espresso, violet pastille and licorice on the slightly reduced nose. Rich, broad and deep, with a sappy sweetness and a note of chocolate. Still a bit youthfully unforthcoming in the middle, but quite explosive on the back end. The building tannins are outlasted by very persistent, classically dry fruit. Will make a major mouthful of wine.
My sample was a bit reduced and exaggerated and therefore impossible to read. Too aggressive to enjoy at the moment. Harsh. (JR)
