Punteggio 94/100 · Da bere 2021-2045, Neal Martin, Sep 2021

The 2001 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc clearly has more intensity on the nose than the millennial, delivering upfront, slightly more exotic scents of passion fruit, guava, beeswax and jasmine. This shows fine focus and delineation, and I agree with Olivier Bernard that its brioche component makes it quite Burgundian. The palate is well balanced and tensile, offering notes of sour lemon, white peach and nectarine and a little grapefruit on the long, bitter-edged finish. This intense white Pessac-Léognan is drinking beautifully.

Note: Due to space limitations, no tasting notes have been included, only my qualitative score. Obviously, the 2001 dry whites are extremely long-lived wines. They can be drunk young or cellared for 20-30+ years. I recently had the pleasure of tasting the 1962 Domaine de Chevalier, which was still incredibly fresh and lively. In many ways, these whites age even more slowly than red Bordeaux.
