The 1988 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc is a vintage that I have encountered only once before. Initially, I am left perplexed by the nose: lanolin, orange blossom and honeysuckle eventually emerging from a fug of resinous aromas. The palate is very fine with crisp acidity and after 30 years continuing to convey energy and vigor. It is adorned with a lovely waxy texture, notes of lemongrass and thyme, then lime and flint towards the finish. I mistook it for Laville Haut-Brion! However, I do prefer this to the 1988 Haut Brion Blanc that was tasted blind alongside. Tasted blind at Domaine de Chevalier.

A great white from Domaine de Chevalier, the 1988 offers up sumptuous aromas of honeysuckle, minerals, white flowers, figs, and smoky wood. Rich and medium to full-bodied, with tremendous persistence on the palate, this youthful offering should have a tremendous upside over the next two decades. Anticipated maturity: now-2020.
