The 2008 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes is deep, dark and quite inward, with significant power in its fruit. Today the wine is impossibly tight, so patience is a key. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2023. This is a striking set of wines from Christian Serafin. It all begins and ends in the vineyards here, which is amply evident after a few minutes of conversation. Palish medium red. Riper on the nose than the regular Gevrey villages , offering redcurrant, smoke, fresh herbs, espresso and game. Also sweeter and more flavorful than the basic village offering, but still with a faint green streak running through it. Still a bit youthfully imploded and nicely firm and fresh on the back. Give this at least three years in the cellar before pulling the cork.
Sweet, jewelly, very wild fruit. The opposite of sophisticated. Bit of a rough diamond. Lots of acidity. I’m just not sure it will settle down into a well-balanced whole... (JR)
