Good deep, fresh red. Lively aromas of black cherry, licorice and menthol. Silky-sweet on the palate, with solid minerality enlivening the black raspberry and licorice flavors. Densely packed wine with lovely emerging perfume of lavender, spices and white pepper. Finishes with ripe tannins. The crop level was a very-low-for-the-vintage 35 hectoliters per hectare due to the high percentage of tiny berries, noted Mortet. A superb showing today for this village offering.
The 2009 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes is made from vines over 70 years old spread across 15 parcels. The fruit is darker, rounder and juicier than in the straight villages Gevrey, but the Vieilles Vignes nevertheless retains terrific juiciness and freshness. The warm, radiant finish makes this impossible to resist. Mortet used 20% whole clusters here.
