Moderately saturated medium red. Musky aromas of gunflint, game, smoke, coffee and rocks; less fruity and primary than the Baudes. Then quite minerally in the mouth and a bit stunted today and folded in on itself. Showed more fruit as it opened in the glass, but finishes with a slight tannic toughness. I was reminded a bit of Cote-Rotie. This was the least impressive of these 2002s, but also the only one I tasted from a 375-ml. bottle.

From 42-year-old vines, the 2002 Gevrey-Chambertin Le Fonteny is a blackberry and pepper-scented wine. Fresh, bright, and packed with cassis as well as currants, it is a pure, structured, slightly firm effort for drinking between 2005 and 2012. Importer: Robert Kacher Selections, Washington, DC; tel. Red-ruby. Highly perfumed aromas of black cherry, raspberry and flowers. Ripe but quite firm, with a distinctly rocky, minerally flavor and a suggestion of game. Has a fine-grained, elegant texture. Finishes subtle, very long and sweet. A rich, vibrant wine that seems a bit rounder than the Â’99 was at a similar stage of its evolution.
