The 1998 La Lagune provides more black than red fruit on the nose, though like many vintages from this era, there is a lack of energy and flair, a wine content to be “ordinary” instead of a great third growth. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy, slightly coarse tannin. Like the 1997 there is something quite lactic about this La Lagune and likewise I wonder whether it was heavily chaptalized since there is something a little ersatz on the finish. Tasted at the La Lagune vertical at the château.

The good news is that this is an elegant, friendly wine. The bad news is that there is not much to it, and the finish is short and compressed. The wine reveals toasty new oak, moderately ripe cherry fruit, and sweet tannin, but there is little concentration or mid-palate in this good, middle-weight Bordeaux. Consume it over the next 7-8 years.
