Punteggio 92+/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2013

(vinified with about 60% whole clusters): Medium red, a bit less saturated than the Clos des Forets Saint-Georges. Knockout sexy perfume of raspberry, white pepper, violet, rose and underbrush. Then juicy but imploded in the mouth, hinting at very pure, sophisticated flavors of dark raspberry, roast coffee, smoke and truffley earth. Finishes broad and long, with substantial but smooth tannins. Quite tight today but this is way more vibrant than a sample I tasted from barrel a year ago.

The 2010 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots is totally mesmerizing from the very first taste. Layers of dark cherries, exotic spice and menthol blossom in the glass as the wine begins to open up. The Suchots impresses for its depth and sheer power. The aromas and flavors continue to build towards a huge crescendo. This is a fascinating wine from Domaine de l'Arlot.

Good bright, deep red. Sexy, musky, fruit-driven aromas of black raspberry, cherry and truffle. Sweet, fat and chocolatey in the mid-palate, with just enough acidity to give it shape. Finishes rich and broad but classically dry, with substantial building tannins. I don't find quite the fruit intensity in the mouth that the nose promises.

The Suchots impresses for its depth and sheer power. The aromas and flavors continue to build towards a huge crescendo. This is a fascinating wine from Domaine de l’Arlot. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2030. I was struck by the sheer beauty of the wines I tasted at Domaine de l’Arlot. The 2010s are stunning, while the 2009s are among the most structured wines of that year. Notes on the domaine’s 2009s will be published in the April issue. The 2010s are also the last wines made by Olivier Leriche, who left the domaine after the 2011 harvest. Leriche was replaced by Jacques Devauges, whose previous experience includes time at Frederic Magnien and Domaine de la Vougeraie. As is the case throughout the region, 2010 is a vintage marked by the devastating December frost, an irregular flowering caused by poor weather and continuing bad weather throughout the summer. Yields were down 30-40% across the board. The wines, however, are stunning, and I urge readers to check them out.
