The 1961 Lafaurie-Peyraguey has an attractive if not entrancing bouquet, displaying the hints of café latte and crème brûlée that I noted in a bottle served at the property in 2015. The palate is well balanced with satisfying depth, even if it does not possess the spark and tension of the superior 1966. This is clearly approaching the end of its drinking plateau, since there is a scintilla of dryness creeping in on the finish, but well-stored bottles should still give pleasure. Tasted blind at the château, the 1961 Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey is a very commendable wine for what was a good, but not great, vintage in Sauternes. It has an appealing bouquet of crème brûlée, café latte and even a touch of strawberry. The palate demonstrates admirable depth if not the transparency and detail of the 1966 tasted alongside. The finish suggests a touch of dryness beginning to develop after 54 years, but otherwise I can see this gently ebbing away over the next decade.
