I hadn't drunk the 1979 Giscours for almost a decade, but the wine has hardly changed in the interim, exhibiting aromas of cassis, sweet berries, cedar box, black truffle and spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, supple and fleshy palate with a sweet core of fruit that's true to the hearty, characterful style of Giscours in this era. While there is no reason to tempt providence, it continues to offer delicious drinking.

This wine has consistently given me considerable pleasure, yet the wine still has a surprising vitality and youthfulness. The color remains a deep, dark ruby with some lightening at the edge. The nose offers up floral scents intermixed with aromas of licorice, truffles, cedar, and peppery black fruits. This medium-bodied wine possesses excellent, nearly outstanding concentration. It has come a long way in resolving some of its tannic bite. Although it will never be exceptional, this has been a consistently excellent wine that is still improving. Ch. Giscours is a Third Growth estate situated in the Médoc appellation of Margaux. With a long and somewhat chequered history, the estate has seen an impressive rise in quality since the early 2000s and is only getting better.
