Deep garnet in color, the 2001 Amon-Ra shows the lovely evolved fruit of a mature Shiraz on the nose. Replete with leathery, chesterfield and sandalwood aromas it is fused with nuances of incense, cedar chest, dusty earth, mulberries and touches of meat and olives. Full, rich and still muscular with some freshness to the fruit, it has a medium level of velvety tannins and a long, earthy finish. Drink it now to 2015+. Importer: Epicurean Wines, Seattle, WA; tel. The opaque ruby/purple-colored 2001 Shiraz Ra (from a 110-year old McLaren Vale vineyard) boasts smoky cassis fruit, licorice, leather, and a hint of camphor. Full-bodied, viscously-textured, fleshy, and concentrated with superb purity, outstanding density, and impeccable balance, it should turn out to be dazzling stuff. Anticipated maturity: now-2014. This offering was bottled shortly after I tasted it. It will be released in late 2002 or early 2003. The private label of Ben Glaetzer, the Egyptian name refers to a temple that historically was believed to have had the largest vineyard in ancient Egypt.
