This has a lovely sweet nose. Now this is classy. it really skips along and has wonderfully juicy fresh fruit and absolutely no shortage of elegance. Bravo!

The 2011 Gruaud Larose has a straightforward nose with tobacco and cedar notes, though, as expected, there is not as much fruit as the previous two vintages. It feels a little austere and almost mean. The palate is medium-bodied with dark berries, allspice and a licorice hint. It actually finishes more strongly with fine tannins and decent length, but it just suffers from that slow start. Tasted at the Gruaud Larose vertical at the château in February 2023.

59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc. Garnet with brick at the rim. Into its drinking window. Dark and savoury on the nose. Palate fresh and satisfying. Acidity intrudes a little, but the fruit is there. Tannins firm behind. Competent rather than exciting. (JL)

The 2011 Gruaud Larose has a well-defined nose, more savoury, earthier in style, singed leather and undergrowth/damp moss infusing the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, spicy red fruit laced with tobacco and a little soy. Fine tension here, quite harmonious towards the finish, this is a fine Saint-Julien. Tasted blind at the annual 10-Year-On tasting.
