Punteggio 95/100 · Da bere 2020-2042, Jeb Dunnuck, Nov 2020

A complex, slightly exotic wine, the 2009 Château Pierre De Lune sports a still youthful ruby hue as well as a perfumed bouquet of red and black fruits, cedar, green herbs, and spring flowers. This carries to a medium to full-bodied Saint-Emilion with a beautifully layered, elegant texture, perfectly integrated acidity and tannin, solid mid-palate depth, and a rock star of a finish. The tannin quality as well as the purity of fruit are exceptional, and this brilliant 2009 can be enjoyed any time over the coming 20 years or more. Hats off to winemaker Tony Ballu for creating such a brilliant wine. It's the finest I've tasted from him.

This blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon displays an inky/purple color and a big, expressive nose of black and blue fruits intermixed with incense, camphor and some subtle toasty oak and forest floor. Full-bodied but certainly not one of the highest in alcohol for a Right Bank St.-Emilion (13.5%), the wine has a lavish texture, impressive purity, and a long finish with no hard edges. This will be hard to resist over the next 10-15 years. The cellarmaster/regisseur at Clos Fourtet, Tony Balu, produces this sumptuous wine, and his consultant is Stephane Derenoncourt. Unfortunately, there is little of the wine, so I will keep my notes short.
