Punteggio 96/100 · Da bere 2010-2029, Jay S Miller, Wine Advocate, Jun 2010

The 2004 Quinta Sardonia is deep purple in color with an already complex perfume. Richer, deeper, and more succulent than the 2005, it has 6-8 years of aging potential. This pleasure-bent offering will drink well through 2029. The estate’s full name is Vinas de la Vega del Duero but all you need to remember is Quinta Sardonia. Located in Sardon del Duero, just outside the Ribera del Duero demarcation line but close enough for inclusion in this report, Quinta Sardonia is a biodynamic project from Peter Sisseck (of Pingus fame) and Jerome Bougnaud. The estate has about 37 acres under vine planted in 2000. The wine is typically composed of a blend of roughly 50% Tempranillo, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the balance Merlot, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec with aging for 18 months in French oak. It is already being proclaimed by some as Spain’s next cult wine. Importer: Eric Solomon Selections, European Cellars, Charlotte, NC; tel. (704) 358-1565

Punteggio 96/100 · Da bere 2011-2027, Jay S Miller, Wine Advocate, Feb 2007

This new project is co-owned by Peter Sisseck of Pingus fame and the vineyards are cultivated using biodynamic principles. The 2004 Quinta Sardonia is a blend of 36% Tinto Fino, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 5% Syrah, 5% Cabernet Franc, 3% Malbec, and 1% Petit Verdot. It is purple-colored with a sexy, kinky nose of spice box, smoke, creme de cassis, blueberry pie, rhubarb, and blackberry liqueur. Already complex on the palate, the wine is ripe and layered with gobs of spicy black fruits, beautifully integrated oak, tannin, and acidity, and a 45-second finish. It can be enjoyed now but should evolve for 4-6 years and drink well through 2027. Peter Sisseck hereby has demonstrated that he does not need old vines to achieve his magic.
