An outstanding wine, the cassis liqueur and blackberry jam-scented 2002 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux St.-Jacques reveals a medium-bodied personality crammed with syrupy black cherries, crisp red currants, and spices. Exhibiting admirable depth and an excellent structure, this appears to be the style of wine that will close down for a few years before roaring back. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2015. Bright ruby. Blackberry, mint, violet, smoky oak and a peppery nuance on the perfumed nose. Juicy, pure and sharply delineated, with lively acidity and strong soil tones. Finishes with serious but fine tannins and excellent length. This was 12.9% potential alcohol, compared to 13% to 13.5% for the grand crus.
Scented and rich. Lively and confident. Racy. Well balanced. A bit of a hole in the middle. (JR)
