The 1997 Fratta is, as one might reasonably expect, the most forward of these wines. Though quite beautiful, the wine is fairly advanced in its soft dark fruit, earthiness and beef bouillon. It is a pretty, mature wine perfect for near-term enjoyment. The 1997 vintage was blended by Paul Pontallier of Chateau Margaux. The blend consists of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon and 28% Merlot.

This wine (69% Cabernet Sauvignon and 31% Merlot, aged in new French oak) It is a dense ruby/purple-colored, with ripe berry fruit drenched in chocolate, toasty new oak, in addition to fine balance, density, and weight. Profound, saturated ruby to the rim. Superripe, primal aromas of blackberry, black cherry, menthol and woodsmoke; strong spicy oak component. Thick, meaty and mouthfilling; powerful and full. The note of woodsmoke carries through to the finish, which is very long and smooth, with ripe, expanding tannins. Really outsized red from northeastern Italy.
