A new wine for me, the 1990 Cabernet/Shiraz Bin 90A is another impressive wine, although I did not think it justified the lofty $100+ price tag. While I preferred the Bin 707, the Bin 90A is an outstanding wine with a deep, saturated ruby/purple color, and a smoky, roasted herb, blackcurrant, jammy-scented nose. Thick, rich, and full-bodied, with elevated tannin, this spicy, boldly-styled wine will drink well for 15-20 years. Importer: PWG Vintners, USA, Inc., Monterey, CA; tel. (408) 655-4848

Fruit from Coonawarra, Barossa Valley – Koonunga Hill Vineyard. A totally trouble-free growing season enabled grapes to ripen perfectly. Vintage conditions were also ideal, enabling fruit to be harvested and processed without compromising quality in any way. 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Shiraz. 20 months in new American oak hogsheads. pH 3.38, TA 7.2 g/l. Bottled January 1992 at Nuriootpa. 1,200 cases. Seems more evolved. Very sweet and rich. Fresh finish. Velvety and long. (JR)
Matured in new American oak barrels for 20 months. Modelled after 60A. 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Shiraz. Coonawarra and Barossa Valley. Intense, purple-ish red. Strong fruit and earthy nose, slightly meaty in the background. Very full, concentrated flavours: mocha, fruits, and oak. Very well balanced and powerful. Cool, long finish. (VD)
The 1990 Cabernet Shiraz Bin 90A is refined and expressive, delivering a powerful, composed core of sweet cassis, new leather and violets, with youthful purity. It’s a Claret style with real tension. The tannins remain tight and muscular after almost 35 years. This wine is built for the very long haul and will easily sail past 50 years and beyond.
