Good bright medium ruby. Blueberry, violet, spices and a whiff of mocha oak on the nose. Pliant, fine-grained and seamless; not especially large-scaled or plush but very nicely balanced and understated, with ripe acidity giving shape to the dark berry, tobacco and mineral flavors. Finishes with suave tannins and subtle length. I'd wait a few years before pulling the cork.

Punteggio 91/100 · Da bere 2011-2026, Robert Parker, May 2011

A beautiful wine from this biodynamically farmed vineyard (in the late 1800s it was part of the huge Figeac estate), this blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc achieved 13.5% alcohol naturally. The wife of Stephane Derenoncourt, Christine, manages the winery and has produced an outstanding sleeper of the vintage. Sweet raspberry, blueberry, kirsch, licorice, incense and spice aromas soar from the glass of this dark plum/ruby-colored 2008. Lush, round and layered, it can be drunk now and over the next 12-15 years.

Savoury marmite notes with really sleek fruit and character. Good balance and density. Confidence, bite and substance. (JR)
