Punteggio 95+/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2011

Bright, dark red. Ripe, deep aromas of crushed blackberry, blueberry, licorice and menthol. Silky on entry, then juicy and energetic in the mid-palate, displaying outstanding vivacity to its explosive dark fruit and floral flavors. The sweet oak component on the finish adds to the wine's appeal without dominating its fruit. Offers a superb combination of elegance and thrust. This wonderfully tangy, very long wine leaves the taste buds vibrating.

Resin, talcum, and dark fresh berries scent the Claude Dugat 2008 Griotte-Chambertin, which displays a formidable concentration of cassis and boysenberry on a palate supported by fine tannins. Cherry pit bitterness, peat, and licorice lend dark diversity to this grand cru’s long finish, while a sense of chalkiness pulls it in a slightly austere direction, accentuated I suspect by its recent bottling. This long, strong Griotte should have at least 15 years’ potential. Claude Dugat reports that his triage in 2008 was more for rot than under-ripe berries, since his routine willingness to resort to drastic crop-dropping serves to guarantee that the fruit matures. He did however report back-off slightly on the total length of maceration. Importer: Robert Kacher Selections, Washington, DC; tel. (202) 832-9083

Bright ruby-red. Great precision to the aromas of boysenberry, blueberry and licorice. Extremely primary, penetrating dark fruit flavors are given uncanny energy by peppery, fruity acidity. Much less expressive and more imploded today than the Charmes, but this infant boasts outstanding verve and intensity and even greater persistence. Finishes with explosive black cherry perfume. This one should evolve at a snail's pace.
