Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2012-2022, Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate, Sep 2019

This was a brilliant showing for the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape. While it's showing hints of leather, there's also still plenty of fruit. Full-bodied, silky and drinking at its peak, this delicious wine finishes savory and long, adding hints of licorice and black olives. Drink any remaining bottles over the next few years.

80% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah, Counoise and Cinsault. Fruit cake, black cherry, marzipan, sweet spice. Fleshy, open and savoury. Chunky body yet fine tannin and fresh acidity. Truffle notes on the finish show the maturity. (RH)

90% Grenache. Very intense black spices on the nose. Pungent! Sweet start. Heady and a bit of an assault on the senses really. (JR)

Grippy and firm at first, with a traditional, age-worthy feel, the 2009 Domaine Raymond Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape (80% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre, and the rest a mix of Syrah and other grape varieties) opens up beautifully with air and delivers a classic array of black cherry, licorice, fresh flowers, and sappy underbrush, medium body, and a focused, structured palate. This needs 3-4 years in the cellar, and will drink beautifully for over a decade. Depending on how the tannin develops here, it could easily warrant a higher score down the road.
