Seeming to be drinking at maturity, this bottle of 1988 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape started out reserved and muted, only to open up beautifully in the glass over the evening. Subtle garrigue, rose petal, and meaty aromas are supported by surprisingly fresh, mature red fruits on the nose. The overall mature feel carries over to the palate where the wine is medium bodied with perfect integration and a seamless, long finish. I like the freshness here, and I think this bodes well for it continuing to drink well, but I see no reason to hold these.

Much more like the 1990 than like the 1989. Redolent of meat and undergrowth and leather though there is also a hint of something floral, possibly lavender. Herbal and gamey and definite smoky bacon character. Lacks the grace and elegance of 1989. (JH)
The 1988 is firmly structured and elegant, with sweet, sweaty horse/old leather notes that may or may not be brett. Medium-bodied, earthy, firm, and vigorous, my instincts suggest it has reached full maturity, but I suspect it will always remain a firm, muscular example of Beaucastel without the charm, depth, and intensity of either the 1989 or 1990. This Châteauneuf-du-Pape estate is one of the Rhône’s most famous addresses. With a history stretching back to the 16th century, Beaucastel remains family owned and run, with the fifth generation of the Perrin family – Marc, Pierre, Thomas, Cécile, Charles, Matthieu and César – at the helm today.
