Punteggio 17/20 · Da bere 2006-2018, Richard Hemming MW, jancisrobinson.com, Oct 2017

Caramel, white chocolate, oil, dried-out fruits with no primary freshness left, yet no staleness either – this is still very much alive and kicking. A fascinating display of how low-acid, hot-climate white wine can age. (RH)

At 10-years of age, the 2002 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape is fully mature, yet still kicking, with burgundian-like aromas of forest floor, garrigue, barnyard, and sweet red fruits on the nose. Certainly from a difficult vintage that had a lot of dilution when brought into the winery, Paul-Vincent bled off a portion of the free run juice to give it more concentration and body. This shows and while the wine is on the lighter side of medium-bodied, it has a solid mid-palate and the hallmark silkiness of the estate. Certainly not a great wine, but I bet a well-stored bottle would surprise a few people if put into a blind lineup of mature reds. If you have ‘em, drink ‘em.

A candidate for the wine of the vintage in 2002 is Clos des Papes’ 2002 Chateauneuf du Pape. A severe selection resulted in a medium-bodied, Burgundian-styled red possessing sweet and sour cherry, pomegranate, spice box, and balsam wood characteristics. Natural alcohol of 13.8% gives the wine body. Light tannin is noticeable in the spicy finish. This 2002 should drink well for 7-8 years.
