From a vintage where they didn't finish the harvest until early in October, the 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape (80% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre, 7% Syrah and the balance Cinsault) is an elegant, fine, seamless and medium-bodied effort that has classic, mature notes of sweet red fruits, cedary spice and garrigue. It's one of those wines where the bottle will be empty before you know it.

Another 2004 that I'm happy to own and the 2004 Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape is an easy drinking, beautiful wine. The nose is the highlight and while big, sweet and perfumed, shows some serious richness and depth to the aromas. Cassis, white flowers (Lilly's to be exact), licorice, hot asphalt and an almost burgundian sappiness that could fool me in a blind tasting as being imparted by oak. The palate is medium bodied, balanced with nice precision, purity and decent depth. Fined grained and subtle tannins show up on the medium length finish.
Medium red. Ripe red fruits and minerals on the nose; like a Burgundy in its aromatic profile. Very fresh and elegant, with precise strawberry and redcurrant flavors, impressive focus and a long, juicy finish. This is absolutely delicious now but has the balance for cellaring.
Low-key nose and, like Marcoux’s Lirac, very simple fruit flavours. Perhaps just very dumb? (JR)
