The 2005 Envoy GSM is composed of 60% Grenache, 30% Shiraz, and 10% Mourvedre. It presents an enticing perfume of damp earth, forest floor, spice box, kirsch, and blueberry. This leads to a velvety-textured, intensely flavored wine with outstanding depth and length. It can be enjoyed over the next 8-10 years. The Colonial Estate is the Australian project of Englishman and Bordeaux chateau owner Jonathan Maltus. His 45 hectares in Saint-Emilion encompass Le Dome, Ch. Laforge, Clos Nardian, and Ch. Teyssier. His first vintage in Australia was 2002. Current production is up to 25,000 cases. Importer: USA Wine West, San Rafael, CA, Tel. (a 60/30/10 blend) Dark purple. Fresh dark berry aromas deepen with air, developing a ripe, smoky bouquet. Dense and ripe on the palate, showing brooding bitter cherry and blackcurrant flavors and chunky tannins. Gains an exotic floral pastille quality on the long, spicy finish. This needs a serious steak.
Saturated violet. Perfumed, smoky aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and graphite. Leads off with sweet dark berry flavors but takes a darker turn, picking up notes of bitter chocolate, black cardamom and espresso. Dominated by its mourvedre component today, showing serious structure but also obvious concentration and deep, sweet fruit. This one will need some time.
