The 1997 Chateauneuf du Pape Roussanne Vieilles Vignes (100% Roussanne from 50-year old vines) could easily be called the Montrachet or Chevalier-Montrachet of Chateauneuf du Pape. This cuvee has been remarkable in the past, and the 1997 is spectacular. It reveals lots of definition, as well as spectacular concentration, a viscous texture, honeyed floral and citrusy-like flavors, full body, and a finish that goes on for 40-50 seconds. A quintessential Roussanne, it is a great example of the heights this unheralded varietal can achieve. The 1997 should drink well for two decades or more. 100% roussanne; 50% aged in one-year-old barriques, the rest in cuve . Distinctly green cast to the color. Reticent but spicy aromas of lemon, honey, white flowers, minerals and mint. Lovely subtlety and clarity of flavor; less unctuous and more racy today than the above. Very intensely flavored. Finishes very fine and firm, with no sensation of heat. Unevolved but already quite stylish. This will be superb.

This Châteauneuf-du-Pape estate is one of the Rhône’s most famous addresses. With a history stretching back to the 16th century, Beaucastel remains family owned and run, with the fifth generation of the Perrin family – Marc, Pierre, Thomas, Cécile, Charles, Matthieu and César – at the helm today.
