Note di degustazione
Bright red with ruby highlights. Cool aromas of raspberry, smoke, meat and crushed stone. Wonderfully silky and sweet but with well-integrated acidity enlivening the complex flavors of pungent red berries, spices, leather and earth. Displays a creamy old-vines character but also boasts the energy of the vintage. (This cuvee typically has a relatively low pH, according to Mortet.) The youthfully tight finish features noble tannins and a whiplash of sweet fruit.

The 2010 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux floats on the palate with effortless grace in its exquisite red berries, flowers and licorice. Sweet floral notes reappear to frame the refined, almost fleeting finish. This Champeaux is a bit on the delicate side in 2010.
(Mortet owns parcels of old vines in all four corners of the climat ; aging in 80% new oak; from a crop level of 27 hectoliters per hectare): Good deep red. Dark raspberry, flowers, spices and a wild note of game on the nose. Large-scaled, fat and creamy, but with lovely tang to the flavors of raspberry, pomegranate and coriander. Ultimately less open today than the premier cru, but juicy, seamless and very long on the aftertaste, with a serious tannic structure that will require aging. This is usually a full degree higher in alcohol than the Lavaux, notes Mortet, but with a low pH.

Arnaud Mortet is focused on making elegant, refined wines. In 2010 he sought to achieve that through gentle extraction and less use of new oak barrels, which is broadly the direction his winemaking is headed, notwithstanding the many particulars that present themselves each year. Mortet planned to age the 2010s fifteen months in barrel, then rack the wines into steel. Yields are of course down across the board, but that won’t be much of a surprise to readers given the vintage. Overall, the Mortet 2010s are striking for their beauty and transparency. The 2009 also showed brilliantly from bottle. I will report on those wines in the April issue. Importer: Martine’s Wines, Novato, CA; tel. (415) 883-0400
