The 2005 Villars is showing beautifully today. A deep, burly Fronsac, Villars packs a good deal of punch. Ripe red berry fruit, iron, rose petal, cedar and cinnamon give the 2005 an attractive aromatic upper register. All things considered, this juicy, pleasantly hearty Fronsac has quite a bit to offer.
The 2005 Villars has a slightly earthy nose, plenty of tannin and some crushed rock minerality. This blend of 75% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon displays beautiful fruit once past its earthy, somewhat autumnal aromatics. This wine gives every impression that the tannins might be elevated for the level of fruit and depth the wine possesses. Anticipated maturity: now-2022?
Maroon purple. A little smudgy on the nose but sweet and gentle and very easy. Slightly austere acidity on the finish. Yeoman stuff that comes as rather a refreshing change from a run of over-extracted St-Émilions. (JR)
