Smells a little reductive – smoky/rubbery. Tight and fresh with moderate depth in the middle and very finely balanced. Very determined mousse still. Shows the house-style finesse. (JH)

Eight years on lees. Toasty, saline, rich and developed. Lots of flinty mineral character and quite an austere sort of smokiness. Broad, expressive, serious. (RH)
Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Disgorged December 2013, dosage 6.8 g/l. Pale and lots of fine bubbles. More austere initially than the NV, yet more dense, but still with that lovely subtle floral note. Very fine yeasty/creamy note. Firmer than the much younger NV, less immediately charming but a touch more staying power. A little bit spicy, mouthwatering finish and length. (JH)
Tasted blind and in retrospect I am cross with myself as I didn't realise it was the Blanc de Blancs that was served. If I had the strong autolysed Chardonnay notes would have been a giveaway. This wine had beautiful balance; everything was just so, even if it may not have been the longest lived of the four 2004 champagnes I was blind tasting. A really very good wine indeed. Everything in its place, but no spring chicken. (JR)
