Punteggio 100/100 · Da bere 2023-2043, Jeb Dunnuck, Feb 2023

Absolute pure perfection in wine, the 2007 IX Estate checks in as a blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, which at that time came from 7-year-old vines. Reminding me of a great Saint-Emilion (despite being Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated), it has a gorgeous perfume of red and black fruits, white truffle, tobacco, and spiced meats, even with a kiss of iron in the background. Full-bodied, powerful, and concentrated, it has perfect tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. It’s drinking at point today but has another two decades, although why wait?

The 2007 Colgin IX Estate, an early wine from Colgin’s estate vineyard on Pritchard Hill, is dense, beautifully perfumed and very young. Readers lucky enough to own it can look forward to another decade-plus of very fine drinking.

Deep ruby-red. Very dark aromas of blueberry, blackberry and licorice. Sweet, plush and highly concentrated; at once thicker and more savory than the Cariad blend, hinting at an exotic sweetness to its sappy, powerful mountain berry and tobacco flavors. If the Cariad is Right Bank in style, this one has the tannic structure of a Pauillac, but with Napa Valley sweetness of fruit. These two wines tasted side by side were remarkably different, which is as it should be, as the two sites have little in common.
