Punteggio 94/100 · Da bere 2018-2040, William Kelley, Wine Advocate, Dec 2018

Ponsot's 1999 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru is superb, wafting from the glass with a vibrant bouquet of cherries, plums, cassis, rich soil, black tea, umami-like bass notes and dried roses. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, layered and complete, with a youthful core of beautifully pure fruit, fine-grained structuring tannins, excellent energy and delineation and a long, tangy finish. This is one of those vintages where one feels Chapelle-Chambertin's proximity to the Clos de Bèze. This is just entering the beginning of its plateau.

**Note: from a .60 ha parcel in En Gémeaux** A ripe, fresh and highly complex nose features a mix of both primary and secondary dark berry fruit scents along with plenty of Gevrey-style earth and discreet spice nuances. There is excellent intensity to the relatively broad-shouldered flavors that possess fine volume and very solid mid-palate concentration before culminating in a firmly structured, mineral-driven, serious and overtly austere finish. This is very impressive but note that to my taste it is still at least 5 years too early to be popping any corks on this beauty.

The most beguiling sweet violet perfume on the nose – extremely hedonistic. So rich and lovely now! Sumptuous fruit, although there is still quite a lot of tannin underneath. Chiselled for the future but already sweet and rich. Bravo! Be careful to drink with something chewy if you serve it now. (JR)
