Punteggio 88/100 · Da bere 2018-2025, Neal Martin, May 2019

The 2001 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru has a very elegant bouquet with pure and clean raspberry and wild strawberry fruit, desiccated orange peel, singed leather and hints of truffle oil coming through with aeration. I admire the manner in which this maintains its precision. The palate is medium-bodied with an odd milk chocolate note on the entry that suggest heavy-handed use of new oak. That is a shame because there is good body and substance here, but even after 17 years it articulates the cooperage more than the fruit or the terroir. Tasted at Sarah Marsh’s 2000 and 2001 horizontal tasting.

Friendly, sweet and appealing start and then the acid starts to insist on the palate. Rather drying finish. (JR)

The 2000 Chapelle-Chambertin displays a nose of cedar-tinged red cherries and spices. A sexy, supple wine, it is medium-bodied, satin-textured, and filled with blackberries as well as dark cherries. Some structure providing tannin makes an appearance in its long, flavorful finish. Drink it over the next 7-8 years. Importers: David Shiverick, Langdon-Shiverick, Cleveland, OH; tel.
