Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Chapelle-Chambertin 2011 from J-L Trapet has a spicy and exotic bouquet, quite forward and showy, but lacking the same class as Louis Jadot’s. The palate is medium-bodied with orange rind and citrus lemon on the entry. There is moderate depth here, but very linear in the mouth and with a slight bitterness on the finish. It feels a little constrained compared to some of the other 2011s from this domaine.

Medium red. Aromas of cherry, red berries and flowers. Juicy, spicy and high-pitched in the mouth, with sappy flavors of red cherry and minerals lifted by a rose petal quality. A step up in intensity and inner-mouth tension from the foregoing samples here. Tightly wound, firmly tannic and long on the finish, with very good lift. Give this three or four years in the cellar.
Trapet's 2011 Chapelle-Chambertin is a model of precision and elegance. Sweet tobacco, incense, orange peel and wild flowers all lift from the glass. There is plenty of underlying fruit and structure to fill out the wine's classic-feeling frame. The Chapelle finishes with fabulous freshness and energy. This is a terrific showing. Chapelle is the warmest of Trapet's three Grand Cru sites. The 2011 is a beauty. I won't be surprised if it ages gracefully for many years.
(40% vendange entier; a blend of vines planted in the 1960s and another parcel planted before World War II): Bright medium red. Aromas of rose petal and spicy vanillin oak. The fattest yet of this series, with ripe acidity framing the suave, fine-grained red fruit and floral flavors. Lovely perfumed grand cru with a long, ripely tannic aftertaste. Trapet told me that he uses less new oak (40%) for this grand cru but that "the wood always marks the wine." This was the ripest of Trapet's wines in 2011.
