Punteggio 88/100 · Da bere 2022-2030, Neal Martin, Jun 2022

The 1983 Chambertin Grand Cru has a slightly rustic nose with Earl Grey and a touch of menthol, perhaps more like a toothpaste scents. Simple compared to other vintages, including the 1984. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, a little coarse yet balanced with some bitterness on the dry finish. Given how rot-affected the growing season, it deserves a light applause, yet it cannot quite escape the limitations of the vintage. Tasted at the Rousseau Chambertin vertical at La Vienne.

Not quite clear. Pretty impressive depth of ruby – doesn't look old at all. Smells pretty old, mind you! Compost. Very firm and upright and concentrated. Just the merest edge of decay with slightly drying tannins. It is certainly concentrated. Dry end with lots of complex fruit beforehand but an insider's wine. Gamey – rather old school – sort of Averys burgundy. Lots of rose petal plus tannin. A very good 1983! Despite this vintage's reputation, there was no sign of rot in this particular 1983. (DRC has installed their sorting table back in 1977 after the dangerously shrivelled berries of 1976, Hanson reminded us.) (JR)

The Chambertin is backward. If you have a good cellar and plenty of discretionary income, this wine will be superb in 10-15 years.
