Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2019-2032, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, May 2019

Medium red. At once mature and vibrant on the nose, offering rich scents of plum, tobacco, spices, mocha and underbrush. A juicy, spicy wine with modest flesh and texture but intriguing vinosity. Aeration brought fresher red fruits and even more energy and thrust. A savory, classically dry, middle-of-the-road style, displaying a captivating juicy coolness and better integration of acidity and tannins than the '04. A beauty in the context of its vintage. Trapet told me that this wine's malolactic fermentation did not finish until the summer of 2002. (13.3% alcohol; 3.55 pH; 3.6 g/l acidity; 39.5 h/h)

Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2018-2030, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Apr 2017

Medium red. Wild aromas of spiced plum, truffle, smoke and earth; evolving in a graceful way. Sweet and fine-grained but still youthful and not particularly expansive. There are some distinctly cool, even slightly green notes of menthol and pepper but this wine is still short of peak maturity. Finishes with dusty, lively tannins and a note of licorice.

Good saturated full red. Musky, wild aromas of raspberry, game, animal fur, chicory and roast coffee. Silky-sweet, very rich and full, with firm minerality giving the wine an impression of energy. Finishes with building but fine tannins and lingering smoky flavor. This one calls for a good six or seven years of additional cellaring.

Good red-ruby color. Complex, scented nose of redcurrant, smoke, iron, mocha, tobacco, licorice and animal fur. Lush and seamless but kept fresh and firm by sound acidity and underlying mineral spine. Youthfully unevolved but not at all hard. The tightest and most backward of these 2001s, but very long, subtle and vibrant on the aftertaste, coating the palate with dusty stone.
