Punteggio 17.5/20 · Da bere 1960-2030, Jancis Robinson MW, Nov 2021

Reddish orange. Crème caramel nose with a hint of coconut. Then burnt caramel on the end. Not the density of the Yquem. Light and racy almost! Liquid sugar and treacle toffee. (JR)

Ex-cellar bottle served at Chateau Coutet. The ’43 has a deep amber colour not dissimilar to the ’59. It has that chlorine element one finds on mature Barsac, but it is fresh and well defined, with subtle notes of orange blossom, beeswax, honeysuckle and barley sugar. The palate is superb: vibrant notes of dried orange, white peach, a touch of ginger; showing very good weight and harmony towards the finish even if there are signs of dryness creeping in with aeration. Like the Doisy-Daene ’42 tasted but a couple hours previously, one can only wonder how such great Barsacs were made under German occupation. Drink now but will keep. (NM)
