The 2007 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is all elegance and class. It possesses gorgeous depth and roundness in an accessible style best suited for near and mid-term drinking. I don't quite find the structure of the 2006, instead the 2007 impresses for its silky tannins and overall sense of harmony. As always, Allegrini's Amarone is made with an approach that emphasizes approachability rather than power. It will be fascinating to see where the 2007 goes from here.

Corvina, Rondinella, Oseleta. Aged in 100% new barriques. Very dark, impenetrable ruby, with broader violet rim. Brooding, dark sweet fruit with hint of smoke. A touch alcoholic perhaps. Notes of liquorice and dried date. Signature Allegrini acidity and powerful tannins, which are not yet integrated. The wine is struggling a little with the alcohol on the finish, but will settle with age. Very long, powerful finish. (WS)
