Punteggio 94/100 · Allen Meadows, Burghound, Apr 2024

As was the case when it was first bottled, there is enough reduction present to mention but not so much that is masks the spicy and cool red berry aromas that are still largely, if not completely, primary even at 14 years of age. There is excellent richness and muscle to the big-bodied and impressively vibrant medium weight plus flavors that possess fine mid-palate concentration before culminating in a palate staining and solidly long finish. There is power here but overall this is more a Riche of elegance than brawn. For my taste, this is clearly still on the way up though it's not so far away that it couldn't be enjoyed now. I would suggest allowing this 30 or so minutes of air first in the hopes it will help to dissipate the reduction.

(13.8% alcohol "with a bit of chaptalization," according to winemaker Charles Van Canneyt): Deep, full red. Very recent but pure nose eventually reveals scents of musky wild red fruits and smoky, stony minerality; a real essence of Burgundy. Deep and thick on the palate; dense with extract and utterly smooth too but with explosive energy suggesting that this wine will repay long aging. Finishes with outstanding rising smoky persistence and powerful stony minerality. These 2010s, bottled in February of 2012, display extraordinary digestibility.

The 2010 Richebourg is, surprisingly, much more expressive than the Romanée St. Vivant. The wine fills out seemingly in all directions with a gorgeous mosaic of ripe red fruit, crushed rocks, mint and flowers. There is fabulous definition in nuance in the aromas and flavors, yet this remains a Richebourg built on understated finesse rather than power. Mineral notes reappear to give the finish a last burst of energy.

Bright red. Reticent but pure aromas of black raspberry, blueberry, violet and crushed stone. Dry, tactile and very tight, communicating great urgency of fruit but still a bit folded in on itself. Can't match the Romanee-Saint-Vivant today for opulence or sheer showiness but already displays outstanding precision. The sappy, vibrant, palate-staining finish conveys a sense of brooding power. This leaves the salivary glands quivering.
