Deep red-ruby. Highly complex nose melds sappy blackberry, black raspberry, soy sauce, graphite, violet and game. Bright, juicy dark fruit and mineral flavors are further lifted by lovely inner-mouth floral perfume. There's more volume here than in the Chambolle but also excellent framing acidity. Finishes with sweet tannins and excellent persistence. A superb vintage for this consistently strong village wine-from vines that are situated close to the topnotch premier crus Cros Parantoux and Brulees.

From the highest reaches of Vosne Romanee (above Cros Parantoux) comes the Gros 2005 Vosne Romanee Les Barreaux. Bright raspberry and red currant fruit, allspice, ginger, star anise, and a whiff of wood smoke lead to a deeply-fruited palate with bright acids and obviously firm structure, lightly marked by a note of toasty oak. The finish really grips with strong fruit, spices and salty minerality, but there is not the striking refinement of the Chambolle and a certain woodiness persists. Because of the unusually high acid profile of fruit from this site, the wine often needs a while to settle down (possibly the more so for having been lightly filtered this year) and perhaps the oak notes will be integrated. Also recommended: 2005 Bourgogne Hautes-Cotes de Nuits ($42.00; 86). A Peter Vezan Selection (various importers), Paris; fax 011 33 1 42 55 42 93.

Bright ruby-red. Pungent, nuanced nose combines black raspberry, cherry, flowers, spices, minerals and dark chocolate. Lush but fresh and sappy, with plenty of material for aging. The wine's firm tannic structure suggests it will need six or seven years of bottle aging. Potentially outstanding. I tasted this and the Chambolle from stainless steel tank.

Deep crimson. Zesty with lots of substance and stuffing, plus particularly crunchy, taffeta texture. This captures the racy essence of Vosne. Stil quite chewy. (JR)
