Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2014-2022, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Aug 2011

Showing much better is the 2006 “V” that demonstrates a little more opulence and fruit intensity on the nose with ripe blackberry, raspberry, sloe and cedar with good definition. The palate has firm chalky tannins and a good sense of tension, a citrus-like acidity towards the long poised finish. This has great potential, but again it deserves time in the cellar. Drink 2014-2022. Vergelegen has one of the most dramatic backdrops of any winery that I have visited. Located in Somerset West, this vast estate has a long history dating back to the 17th century, but the winery itself is thoroughly modern, not dissimilar to Pichon-Baron with its octagonal design. The estate was acquired by “Anglo American” in 1987 and two years later, they planted the first vines. They received enormous publicity when Vergelegen hosted the first unbanned meetings of the ANC. Andre van Rensberg is responsible for both the vineyards, which range between 140m and 310m in altitude, and the winemaking, and he is one of the few winemakers to have combatted leaf-roll virus head-on so that their replanting program of virus-free vines look set to bear virus-free fruit. Their portfolio focuses upon classic French grape varieties, divided into their entry-level white label range and their premium, black label range wherein the fruit is sourced exclusively from their own vines. (90% cabernet sauvignon, with 5% each merlot and cabernet franc): Bright, deep red. Currant, plum, spice box, chocolate and mocha on the nose, along with a roasted herb element. Broad, lush and sweet, but with well-integrated acidity to frame the ripe dark fruit, chocolate and licorice flavors. Finishes very long, with fine-grained tannins. Vergelegen's more modern, internationally styled red blend is remarkably full and plush but showed some slightly funky truffle, herb and mocha notes with extended aeration, and less vibrancy than the classic estate red.
