Clearly, this holds its own with the best Bordeaux from 1964. Fully mature, the wine delivers a gorgeous nose of tobacco leaves, dried flowers, ocean breezes, and bright red fruits. The palate is soft, silky, and lively, with more than ample layers of sweet, ripe cherries, cocoa, plums, and the essence of minerals. No decanting, just pop and pour. Drink from 2026-2034.

Tasted at the Château Canon vertical, the 1964 Canon is a gorgeous Right Bank wine that now might seem a little elegiac, yet it is descending from a very high peak. Still quite deep in color, the nose is well defined, a little rubbery perhaps with dried fig, sloes and melted tar. There is something warm and welcoming here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, supple in the mouth and after half-a-century, still full of freshness. It is not a complex Canon and it is not in the same league as the 1964 Figeac or 1964 Cheval Blanc. Whilst there is a touch of dryness on the finish, there is commendable weight and extant presence, adorned with black cherry, fig and a hint of salted licorice on the finish. Drink it over the next decade. Tasted October 2015.
This was apparently recorked in 2004. Pale ruby but beautifully heady and complex. Rich, lifted bouquet and not dense (reminiscent of the Ch La Tour Haut-Brion 1964 served earlier in this dinner) but beautifully balanced. This went very well with our cheeses. (JR)
