Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2005-2020, Robert Parker, Feb 2005

The 2001 The Maiden’s dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by a lovely bouquet of melted chocolate, espresso roast, black currants, berries, licorice, and underbrush. This full-bodied, well-balanced, opulent second wine is as good as many California producer’s primary cuvee. Its sweet, supple tannin and forward personality suggest consuming it over the next 10-15 years. Tel. (707) 944-1441; Fax (707) 944-1444

Full medium ruby. High-pitched, riper aromas of blackcurrant, violet and bitter chocolate. Bright, concentrated and firm, with lively if slightly medicinal kirsch and menthol flavors. The tannins are much less noble than those of the estate's flagship wine, but there's strong material here. Will merit a score at the high end of my projected range if its components come into greater harmony during its final months in barrel, as the 1999's did.
