Punteggio 87/100 · Da bere 2021-2029, Neal Martin, Jun 2022

The 2012 Château de la Dauphine was picked at 30hl/ha, 4-13 October, with malolactic fermentation in 30% new oak. It offers good intensity on the nose, although it needed an hour to really open. On the nose, there are scents of black plum, cassis, loganberry and a light honeyed scent, quite exotic in context of the vintage, most likely due to the low yields. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent, ripe tannins, a fine bead of acidity, quite fresh but a little static towards the finish; the 2012 is a bit monotone compared to other vintages. The alcohol (15%) slightly impedes on this vintage, and I think it would have benefited from more restraint.

The 2012 La Dauphine is certainly a head-turner. Rich, explosive and exotic, the 2012 possesses notable depth and concentration, with generous dark blue and black fruit and plenty of oak. This is a fairly overt style that emphasizes ripeness and sweetness over complexity. My sense is that this Fronsac property is capable of wines of another level, one that satisfies all the senses. Michel Rolland is the consultant. The blend is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc.

The acquisition of this well-known, beautiful estate in Fronsac by proprietor Jean Halley has raised the level of performance dramatically. The 2012, which tips the scales at a whopping 15% alcohol, is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. This is a major sleeper of the vintage. Dense ruby/plum/purple with sweet black cherry and blackcurrant fruits, underlying minerality, a plump, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel and lush, heady texture and length, this is one of the best La Dauphines I have tasted. Drink it over the next 10-15 years, although it is capable of lasting longer.

Black core, purple rim. Aromatic dark fruit. Vigorous, dense but fresh. Just the right amount of chew at this stage. Youthful harmony and length with a fine mineral thread through the fruit. Don't know the price but imagine this will be GV . (JH)
