Punteggio 90/100 · Da bere 2003-2018, Robert Parker, Oct 2000

The dark plum-colored 1995 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Marie Beurrier reveals broadly-formed aromatics of dried herbs, kirsch liqueur, roasted meats, earth, truffles, and spice. The wine is chewy, full-bodied, moderately tannic, long, and pure. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2018. Total production at Bonneau is about 1,500 cases in a good year, but thanks to the insistence of Bonneau's American importer, Alain Junguenet, our country is getting several hundred cases. This is the quintessential artisinal winery, and Henri Bonneau is one of the planet's greatest and most distinctive winemakers. Importer: Alain Junguenet, Wines of France, Mountainside, NJ; tel. Medium-deep red, with a hint of amber at the rim. Reticent aromas of roasted red fruits and chimney soot. Sweet and nicely layered in the mouth, but not currently showing much verve after the recent bottling. Intriguing musky scents of Cuban cigar tobacco and earth. Finishes with rather fine, sweet tannins, especially in the context of the vintage. A dense wine that in a distinctly closed phase; be sure to decant this if you're going to uncork a bottle this winter.

This very old-school property makes the most unique Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The wines are fantastically complex and Boneauu made it as it would have been produced 100 years ago in the commune, using methods that familiar to any of the 11 generations of vignerons in his family who preceded him.
