The 2001 Filhot is distinctly pallid in color. The light, airy nose lacks presence and complexity, offering light lemon verbena and chai scents that blow away in a light breeze. The palate is medium-bodied with sour orange peel, apricot and citrus fruit on the entry and a waxy texture, though it is missing complexity and freshness on the finish.

The 2001 Filhot shows better on the nose than a couple of years ago with scents of honey, whisked egg whites and orange blossom. It is not intense but it shows some detail and more freshness than I expected. The palate is well balanced with a tang of marmalade and quince on the entry. It feels quite linear in the mouth and it cuts away rather swiftly, though I appreciate the spicy notes here and it feels fresh. Tasted at the vertical tasting at Château Filhot.
The Filhot 2001 has a light and rather herbaceous bouquet that seems anaemic compared to its peers. The palate is simple and light, gathers some momentum towards the finish but is rather one-dimensional given the quality of the vintage. Even blind, I knew this was Filhot, and resigned myself to another frustrating under-performance.
