The 1997 Filhot is a Sauternes that I enjoyed many times some 15 years or so ago. Now at 20-years of age, it upholds a commendable bouquet, still fresh and charming with lemon curd and orange blossom aromas, though perhaps it is a little more smudged than before. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity: a tang of marmalade mixed with quince, good depth with plenty of freshness on the finish. It is not going to improve further but it should maintain this level for a few years. Tasted at the vertical tasting at Château Filhot.

Closed and inexpressive with some phenolic hints on the nose. This is a massive, middle-aged wine that has hung up the Do Not Disturb sign. Steer clear for the moment. (JR)
Pale green-tinged straw. Lime aroma drowned in sulfur. Hard and tart on the palate, with acidity and sulfur squashing any underlying texture and flavor. Not much wine here. Not recommended.
