The 1990 Filhot has a light brioche and orange blossom-scented bouquet, a touch of lanolin developing with time in the glass. This is very understated considering the growing season’s usual exuberance. The palate offers scents of butterscotch and caramel, a hint of orange pith on the entry. This is balanced if simple for a 1990 with a pointed, slightly short finish. It still has drinking pleasure to give even if it does not come from the top drawer of Sauternes this vintage. Tasted at the vertical tasting at Château Filhot.

Filhot, which prefers to tank rather than barrel ferment its wines, produced a 1990 that is clearly the best wine I have tasted from this estate. It exhibits gorgeously ripe, honeyed tropical fruit, an intense, medium to full-bodied personality, wonderful purity, fine acidity, plenty of botrytis, and a long, zesty finish. What makes this wine so appealing is its combination of richness, crisp acidity, liveliness, and zestiness. Last tasted 11/94
