Saturated red-ruby. Dark berries, licorice and spicy oak on the nose. Juicy and tightly wound, with firm acids framing the intense dark berry and licorice flavors. A bit youthfully hard today, finishing with solid tannic spine and a slight dryness. A serious Rioja that needs at least a couple years of additional bottle aging.

The expensive, deep ruby/purple-hued 2002 Altos de Lanzaga exhibits a sumptuous bouquet of black raspberries, kirsch, plums, figs, white chocolate, and spicy oak. Medium to full-bodied, with loads of character as well as glycerin, and a heady finish, this modern-styled Rioja will drink well for 7-8 years.
