Good full, deep red. Deep, complex nose offers musky mocha, smoked meat, wild herbs and soil tones to go with the ripe plum fruit. Suave on entry, then impressively silky, lush and concentrated in the middle. At once fuller and more vibrant than the Charmes. Builds and expands on the chewy, saline, perfumed finish, with big, broad dusty tannins to support good mid-term ageability. Very Morey-Saint-Denis, and the clearest expression of its terroir among these 2009s today.

The 2009 Morey St. Denis Les Faconnieres shows striking depth. It is one of the more clenched Moreys in this lineup. A persistent vein of minerality gives the wine its focus and pointed personality. The intensity of the fruit peeks through occasionally, but this really needs at least another few years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029. Virgile Lignier’s 2009s show notable intensity and ripeness, but also preserve quite a bit of freshness through the use of whole clusters, which reach as much as 100% in two wines. The Bourgogne and Chambolle were bottled in December 2010. I tasted all of the other wines from tank. Bottling was scheduled for the end of March 2011. Redcurrant, rather thin and astringent. Needs more flesh – acidity is too searing. (RH)

(about one-third vendange entier Good deep red. Brooding crushed raspberry, mocha, wild herbs and spices on the nose, along with a whiff of resiny oak. Big, rich, plummy and full; this really saturates the palate. The substantial fine-grained, suave tannins are completely covered by fruit. An essence of Morey-Saint-Denis but this will need at least a few years in the bottle to shed some of its baby fat and show more definition. Lignier told me he's trying to tone down this wine's size and power, in search of a finer version of the vineyard.
