(100% new French oak): Dark purple. Sexy black and blue fruit aromas are complicated by vanilla, incense and cola qualities. Fleshy cassis and blueberry preserve flavors are sharpened by tangy acidity and given depth by notes of licorice and bitter chocolate. Gains sweetness and depth with air, finishing on a sweet black raspberry note, with slow-building tannins. This wine is shockingly elegant for its level of concentration and power.

Punteggio 94/100 · Da bere 2018-2030, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Feb 2013

The 2009 Malleolus de Sanchomartin comes from vines between 75 and 85 years of age, matured in French new oak for 22 months. The aromatics are a tight fist of fruit at the moment: almost belligerently backward. The palate works better with lush, ripe cranberry, kirsch and raspberry fruit interlaced with tobacco, the decadent, rambunctious finish delivering a payload of sweet, sexy ripe fruit. Drink 2018-2030. The important year for Bodegas Emilio Moro is 1932 – when the Finca Resalso vines were planted and Emilio Moro was born. For many years the fruit was sold off in bulk until 1988, when Jose Moro Espinosa invested his savings and established his own bodega, joining the D.O. the following year. I found the wines to be rich, decadent and packed to the rafters with ebullient ripe fruit. Personally, I would prefer to see less dependency on new oak, as I feel that it is masking the individuality of the terroir. If you have a pretty face – there is no need to hide it away. The 2009 Malleolus de Sanchomartin was tasted from a barrel sample. Opaque purple in color with lovely floral aromas, Asian spices, and incense, on the palate it effortlessly combines power with elegance. It has superb grip, great volume, and plush, succulent fruit. It has the structure to evolve for 8-10 years and should drink well through 2040. (Not yet released) Malleolus de Sanchomartin is sourced from a vineyard planted in 1964 with cuttings grafted from the Valderramiro vineyard. Alcoholic fermentation is with indigenous yeasts with ML in barrel. The wine is then aged for 22 months in French oak.
